Thank you for your interest in Chaco Canyon Archeology trip, jointly sponsored by ADK and Four Corners School of Outdoor Education (FCS). This trip provides a wonderful opportunity to explore ancestral Puebloan ruins (AD 850 - AD 1250) while hiking daily in Chaco Canyon National Historic Park with expert guides and the noted archeologist, Virginia Wolf. Chaco Canyon National Historic Park was a major urban center of ancestral Puebloan culture between AD 850 and AD 1250, and served as a hub for ceremonial trade and administration for the prehistoric Four Corners area. Chaco is remarkable for its monumental public and ceremonial buildings, engineering projects, astronomy, artistic achievements, and distinctive architecture - an ancient urban center that still amazes and inspires us a thousand years later.

Exploring the Archaeology of Chaco Canyon will be the primary focus of this program. We will study the prehistory of Chaco Canyon, and explore how the people of Chaco lived their daily lives. We will also explore the wonders of archaeoastronomy as it related to the Chacoan Culture by attending the Park Service's evening sky programs, slide shows, and by using their observatory. In addition to exploring the wonders of the Canyon, we will take some time to visit rock art sites and ruins surrounding our base camp.

Our program will be for the active outdoor person with hikes ranging from 1- 6.5 miles round trip, with one hike going onto the rim of the canyon overlooking some of the magnificent great houses. Our lodging will be a primitive camp area located in the park, with plenty of potable water, a tent, and group gear. Sleeping bags and pads are available.
