   A FOOT IN IRELAND
JULY 29 - AUGUST 7, 2005
$1799
DJ Kitzel, Leader
Join us as we day hike the Emerald Island for an in-depth exploration of the rugged northwest. Thrill to the enchanted windswept mountains of Connemara and Mayo. Explore places with names like Gleann Chochan and Binn Bhraoin. See the Irish coast from Achill Head or the countryside from atop ridges. We will try some Irish folk dancing and learn about Irish culture and traditions. Our personal contacts in Ireland will assure you a trip with an inside look at the culture.

Most days we will have different hike options to accommodate different interests and energy levels. Some hikes will be 8-12 miles long and others will be 6-8 miles. There are plenty of exploration and interesting sites to tour, with less hiking, too, if you want a chance to relax.

Your Irish guide will meet you at Shannon airport and begin your journey to a bastion of traditional Irish culture and heritage: Counties Galway and Mayo. Our day hikes will start from the area around Leenane and accommodate a wide range of abilities yet guarantee breathtaking vistas. You may rest or shop as well.

After 3 days here, we will move to near the village of Roundstone. This is where Jackie King, our Irish guide, hails from. Among other curious places and activities, he will show us the ancient tradition of bog cutting.  Along the way you'll see Iron Age ring forts, Megalithic tombs, and take in the 30 peaks (we will not climb all of these in one day) of the Twelve Bens and the Maumturks. Afterward, retire to a pub for some live music and a pint.  Your guides will take you places not found on any tourist map!  Afternoons will be free for strolling Kylemore Abbey or shopping in seaside villages.

Let this rugged landscape of craggy spires, mysterious bogs, and the North Atlantic cast its charming spell on you. DJ Kitzel, our veteran AT through hiker, will accompany you as you explore Ireland. You will have opportunities to search for leprechauns and gold as well.

We will fly in and out of Shannon. For your ease of travel and price savings we suggest the group fly together from the US. Depart from the USA on Friday, July 29th and fly to Shannon, Ireland.  Return to USA on Sunday, August 7th.  Flights usually leave in the late afternoon and fly through the night arriving in Ireland the next morning. The flight home is on the same day. We can help book flights.  Airfare is not included in the trip price.

Price of $1799 ($300 nonrefundable) includes: Leader, Irish guide, lodging (double occupancy), meals (except 3 dinners), entrance fees for group tours, ground transportation in Ireland. Not included:  Airfare (estimated at $750-$850 roundtrip, Rochester, NY to Shannon, Ireland). $300 nonrefundable deposit due to register and balance due by check or cash by June 1st, 2005. For a complete information packet with itinerary and to sign up, contact the leader, DJ Kitzel, PO Box 82, South Lima, NY 14558, telephone 585-346-5597, E-mail info@PackPaddleSki.com.
