The
picturesque village of Mallnitz is one of the best kept secrets of the
high Austrian Alps. It's nestled within Austria's Hole Tauren National
Park in Central Europe. You are surrounded on all sides by impressive
mountain peaks and the largest glaciers in the Eastern Alps. The scent
of “freshness” is everywhere; in pure, crisp air, clear water, streams
teeming with trout, and roaring waterfalls that fall into pristine
meadow lakes. In Mallnitz, there are only 1200 year round residents,
and the horses roam free.
Mallnitz is located in Austria's southern most region of Carinthia,
which is north of Italy and Slovenia. It is situated at about 4000ft.
in a deep mountain valley surrounded by mountains on all sides ranging
from 7000ft. to 11000ft. The Grossglockners, the highest peak in
Austria, is almost always in our view. Direct train service makes this
location convenient. The village is only 2 hours from Salzburg and just
4 hours from Munich.

We
will be based in the four-star Hotel Alber located near the central
square in the small village. It is a family run Hotel with
more than
100 years of traditional hospitality and outdoor enjoyment; beautiful
Austrian wood décor in the lobby, large rooms with all the
desired amenities, four-course freshly prepared meals, spa area, and a
private backyard for afternoon sunning and reading.
This will be mostly a moderate to strenuous hiking trip with many short
strenuous sections. When it is convenient, we will use mountain lifts
to quickly get us up to the high mountain meadows and trails. Compared
to the Adirondacks, the hiking in the Alps is much easier in terms of
footing. There will be 6 dedicated hiking days and an option of a _ day
hike on our rest day. We will have 3 guided hikes led by the owner of
the Hotel Alber, Willi or Klaus Alber – top hiking guides in the
region, and 3 self-guided hikes led by me. The length of the daily
hikes will range from 4 to 6 hours of dedicated hiking time or 5 to 7
hours total with verticals of up to 2500 ft. We will have a day off in
the middle for a visit to the “Raggaaschluct” gorge. Fee included in
trip price, and then sightseeing, exploring, half day hike led by me,
or just relaxing around the Hotel Alber.
