The High
Pyrenees: eight days of mountain hiking though the central part of the
Pyrenees in France and Spain and a two day visit to St. Bertrand de
Comminges, a Roman and medieval cathedral city, and to the 18,000 year
old prehistoric cave paintings of Gargas. We will carry our breakfasts
and lunches and will eat most evening meals in mountain refuges. We
will take advantage of the usually mild Mediterranean weather to camp
out in tents. In the village of Cauterets, we will stay in a mountain
pension at the beginning and end of the hike. For eight days we will
thread our way over mountain cols, high valleys and mountain cirques.
The trip will have a two day introductory overnight hike and then a six
day tour. One evening, we will enjoy a dinner to smple some of
Southwest France's best foods and wines in a very good restaurant.
The trip will start in the mountain village of Cauterets and end in St
Bertrand de Comminges. The most convenient airport is Toulouse, France.
The other air options are to Pau or Biarritz. If you are coming from
Paris or London or other points in Europe, you will pass through
Lourdes which is an hour away from Cauterets by snCF bus with service
six times a day.
