THE BEST OF TUG HILL
Sep. 12- 18, 2010
$450

Dick Lightcap, Trip Leader

The Tug Hill Region is relatively unknown to most people. It is a 2,100 square mile region of New York State located between Lake Ontario and the Adirondack Park. Larger than Delaware or Rhode Island, it is one of the most rural and remote sections of the state and the Northeast. Tug Hill’s elevation and position with respect to Lake Ontario results in an average annual snowfall in excess of 200 inches – the heaviest snowfall east of the Rockies!

This region consists of 5 state parks and historic sites, 2 unique areas, 6 wildlife management areas, and 47 state forests! It also features several streams, a few waterfalls and “gulfs” – large, deep gorges created by melting glaciers. We will also visit the St. Lawrence River and the eastern shore of Lake Ontario.

Lots of driving: I will be driving a leased van each day on our excursions – in Oswego, Oneida, Lewis and Jefferson Counties. We’ll hike, averaging no more than 5 miles hiking in any one day, not at one time and with little elevation change. We are going to sneak out of the Tug Hill Region for two days to take in some nearby attractions.

Our lodging will be in cabins at Wabasso 4H Camp, 177 acres beautifully situated on Millsite Lake near Redwood (not Redfield), which is north of Watertown and east of Alexandria Bay. Bring your sleeping bag for the rustic living conditions. Toilets and showers are in a nearby building. You will be sleeping in cabins with bunks and will be preparing their own meals. A refrigerator, microwave, access to a stove, etc. will be available.

September is usually one of the best months of the year with flowers still blooming, the days still warm but not hot, and the peak of the bug season long gone. Kids have returned to school and adults returned to work. Most places are still open. Hunting hasn’t really started, although fishing is popular in one of the best spots in New York State.

DAILY PLAN: We plan to depart each morning at 8 AM in the van and casually visit the sites listed in the itinerary.  Here we will take short hikes on the trails or in the area.  Based on the recommendations of past participants I have limited the number of places that we will visit, so that we can enjoy and appreciate these venues without hurrying. In the evening we can walk down to the lake and just take in the ambiance and serenity of the camp grounds.
