For six days and nights in the land of the midnight sun, we will see and experience Norway’s—indeed Europe’s—largest mountain plateau: the Hardangervidda, home of the last wild reindeer in Europe and where Omundsen trained for his polar expeditions. The Norwegian DNT’s brochure describes our itinerary as “one of the gems” among its many offerings. Much of this region is National Park land, a landscape of tremendous variety: deep valleys, mountain ridges, thunderous waterfalls, and steep terrain to the fjords on the west, with wide open, gentler lake-dotted slopes in the central and eastern areas. Our hike starts in the southwestern part of the park and heads to the beautiful Hardanger fjord, NW of the park. It affords fine views of the iconic Hårteigen peak and great views from this peak’s top, a 1 hour climb. After the hike, we will visit Bergen, the western “capitol” of Norway for 1 1/2 days before taking the train back to Oslo. This rail journey is itself world famous for its splendid mountain scenery.

Level of Difficulty:  This is a moderate backpacking trip that requires hikers to carry 18-22 lb. packs. If hikers haven’t done actual backpacking in several years, they should be used to carrying a good-sized day pack with their food and emergency gear on 3 days of sequential days of hiking. The key here is “sequential;” hikers must be able to enjoy walking 5-8 hours on moderate trails for 6 days in a row and able to handle the sections that are steep, snowy, wet and/or rocky. We will stay at our 3rd mountain lodge two nights; this allows us to have an easier day if we like, and to explore the area around Litlos.

Outing Cost:
The cost will be $1535 per participant.
