Daily Itinerary

On any given day the itinerary may change slightly due to weather (wind, rain), water/trail conditions or group strength.

DAY 1- Monday 5/16/11
Travel, rendezvous with group and orientation. Fly into Great Falls, MT airport and take shuttle to the hotel (make own reservations) Meet the ADK group for dinner (on own) followed by a brief orientation meeting @ 7:00PM.

DAY 2- Tuesday 5/17/11
Breakfast on own. Wilderness Inquiry vans will pick group up at hotel in Great Falls, MT @ 9:00AM. We will visit the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Great Falls, have lunch, and then drive to Coal Banks Landing on the Missouri River, exploring Fort Benton along the way. Bring NPS Golden Eagle Pass if you have one. We will camp along the river at Coal Banks tonight.

Day 3- Wednesday 5/18/11
After breakfast pack up camp, practice canoeing skills, and then start down river. We will camp in the rich bottomlands along the river near the Eye of the Needle. There may be time for a late afternoon hike after setting up camp.

Day 4- Thursday 5/19/11
After a brief hike to the cliffs above we will push off on the river. Enjoy the same white cliffs and scenic beauty that Lewis and Clark described as "scenes of visionary enchantment" when they first came through in 1805. Pass Citadel Rock and camp near the Hole in the Wall formation. We will camp on river bank. Optional short hike.

Day 5- Friday 5/20/11
Spend most of the day paddling along the banks of the river. Camp at Slaughter River, where Lewis and Clark camped in 1805 on their way west and in 1806 on their return trip. Set up camp, explore the area and read from Lewis and Clark's log.

DAY 6- Saturday 5/21/11
Look for big horn sheep along the bluffs as we paddle downstream toward Judith Landing, a historic area for the Blackout tribe, fur traders, and steamboats. Conclude the trip at Judith Landing after lunch. We will board WI's van transport and expect to return to hotel (TBA) Great Falls (cost not included) late that evening where we will have our farewell dinner (on own).

DAY 7- Sunday 5/22/11
Travel day. Fly home from Great Falls airport
