The Haute Route was
established almost a hundred years ago as a high
mountaineering route that linked two of Europe's premier mountaineering
centers, Chamonix and Zermatt. The Haute Route, (or the High Route or
Mountaineers Route) is the name given to this route undertaken by foot
or ski by an English hiking Club.
Few long distance hikes offer the variety and grandeur of landscape as
this route. Beginning in Chamonix at the foot of the highest mountain
in Europe and the Alps, Mont Blanc, the haute route winds its way
through the Swiss Canton of Valais for 112 miles. Taking in what is
thought to be the greatest collection of four thousand meter peaks in
all the Alps, it culminates at the foot of the Matterhorn in Zermatt.
It has been a dream of mine for over 25 years to hike this famous trek.
There are 12 stages in which most hike the entire Haute Route in 12 +
days. The first 2 stages and the last stage are the least impressive
and thus I have decided to hike 9 of the 12 stages in 7 consecutive
days and 8 nights.
While Mont Blanc will remain in view much of the hike, you will also
become familiar with equally impressive peaks such as the Grand Combin,
pigne d'Arolla, Dent Blanche and the Weisshorn. This hike is nothing
short of fantastic!
We must carry everything with us in our backpack as there will be no
luggage transfers. This is a strenuous route covering about 78 miles
and crossing 11 passes, many over 9000 feet. You must an experienced
hiker in excellent physical and climbing condition. We will hike
beneath imposing peaks and glaciers of the Swiss Alps, wander through
alpine meadows and larch forests, cross high, barren passes and descend
into lush green valleys. We will lunch in places with awesome
panoramas; stay at two remote mountain huts and 6 small Swiss villages
and hamlets.
While there will be 3 ambitious days there will also be 2 or 3 more
leisurely days; although by ADK standards I would describe everyday as
strenuous. We will hike the entire route with only one short transfer
by the public Post Bus from Arolla to Evolene.
Please read the itinerary very carefully so that you clearly understand
the physical challenge of the trip.
