The Classic Traverse
of the Tramuntana Mountains takes us on a magical journey through the
rugged heart of the island. These mountains form the Mallorcan Island
backbone. The scenery and color you will view on this seven day route
is simply breathtaking. Centuries old traders paths, previously used by
old world industries, will show us the way through canyons and over
peaks. Serene, beautiful, tranquil and so Spanish; that is Mallorca
with its picturesque valleys, mountain ranges and sun swept beaches.
Picture an Island of rich color, high limestone mountains, a fertile
interior flat plain, and a shimmering coastal border and you could be
on Mallorca.
Mallorca -Majorca (Spanish and Catalan) is the largest island of Spain.
It is located in the Mediterranean Sea and part of the Baleric Islands
archipelago. The name derives from Latin insula maior, “largest island”
later Maiorica, then Mallorca. English version is Majorca. Mallorca has
two mountain ranges each about 43 miles in length. These occupy the
north-western third of Mallorca with the highest peak, Puig Major 1445
m. or 4700' in the Serra de Tramuntana. The climate is Mediterranean
with the average high in October of 70 and the low 60 averaging a
delightful 65 degrees. The official language is Catalan and Spanish.
Olives and almonds are typical of the Mallorca diet. Among the food
items that can be truly stated as Mallorcan are Sobrassada arros brut
(saffron rice cooked with chicken, Pork and vegetables) and the sweet
pastry ensainada.
Just imagine setting off each morning knowing you will be staying and
eating somewhere completely different that night and to hike there, all
you need is a light day pack as this trip offers full vehicle
assistance which transfers your luggage each day.
This is a moderate hiking trip averaging 10 miles over 5- 6 hours a day
with ascents ranging from 1300' to 2700' and descents of 800' to 3500'.
Our Mallorcan guide describes this trip as follows: “This trip should
present no difficulties to anyone in good condition who's used to
undulating mountain walking. Most of the route is on well-defined
footpaths but there are a few stretches over rough ground.” He grades
the trek “B” overall with an “A” being the hardest and “C” the easiest.
