Itinerary
This is a tentative schedule. Our day to day activities may vary depending on weather conditions. Day 1, Tuesday, February 8, 2011 ![]() Arrive Lihue’s
Airport on Kauai. We will meet at the airport and have transportation
to our lodging. You will be given a general overview of where the
restaurants, shops, etc are.
Dinner: restaurant in the Coconut Marketplace. Day 2, Wednesday, February 9, 2011 We will transport the
group to the grocery store in the morning. The afternoon will be spent
hiking Sleeping Giant from the East Trail. Nearly the entire trail is
through forest with wonderful views. 4 miles; Elevation gain/loss
1000’
Dinner: Kapaa/Wailua area Day 3, Thursday, February 10, 2011 Hike Kalalau Trail to
Hanakapi’ai Beach (and possibly Hanakapi’ai Falls). We will hike a
section of the most famous trail in all Hawaii. The views along the Na
Pali coast are exceptional. 4 miles –Hanakapi’ai Beach; Elevation
gain/loss under 1000’
We will also have time to visit picture-postcard Hanalei. Hanalei has a 2 mile crescent beach, shops and restaurants. Dinner in Hanalei. Day 4, Friday, February 11, 2011 Our cruise will begin
with a continental breakfast as we head up the Na Pali coast with
waterfalls, sea caves and lush valleys. Hopefully, we will get close to
the whales we have been seeing from shore. We will then head across the
channel to the “forbidden island” of Ni’ihau where we will pick a
snorkel spot. While enjoying a gourmet style deli lunch, we will learn
the story of the island, the people and the history of Ni’ihau. We will
return back in Port Allen harbor around 2PM.
Dinner: Poipu Day 5, Saturday, February 12, 2011 Hike Awa’awaphui
Trail. This will be our first adventure to Waimea Canyon and is one of
Kauai’s beauties. The hike goes through natural tropical gardens to an
adrenaline-rush ridge—the jewel of Na Pali. 6.5 miles; elevation
gain/loss 1500’
Dinner: Kapaa/Wailua area Day 6, Sunday, February 13, 2011 Hike Keahua Arboretum
on the Moalepe Trail/Kuilau Ridge Trail.
We will utilize two trails for an end-to-end hike starting on the Maolepe Trail and ending on the Kuilau Ridge Trail at the Keahua Arboretum. The arboretum planted with both native and introduced tree species is intended as an outdoor classroom for students and tourist alike. 4.5 miles Dinner: Café Coco Day 7, Monday, February 14, 2011Today we will take a
day off and do some touring—checking out Lihue, the Kaua’i Coffee
Company, Kilohana—returning mid-afternoon to get ready for our Lu’au
Dinner: Lu’au Day 8, Tuesday, February 15, 2011 Hike Kukui Trail in
Waimea Canyon. We will walk a part way down the Wiliwili Camp trail.
This hike takes us down into the rainbow hued canyon that rivals any in
Arizona or Utah. We will also take time to sightsee along the Canyon
road and lookouts and get a taste of Hawaiian shave ice at the famous
Jo-Jo’s
Dinner: on the way home -- Day 9, Wednesday, February 16, 2011 Hike Okolehao Trail.
This trail squiggles up to the best vantage point on the Hanalei
coast. 4.5 mile; elevation gain/loss 1200’
Before returning home we will visit Secret Beach and the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge/Lighthouse where you can easily spot red footed boobies, great frigate birds, laysan albatross and Nene. Dinner: Kilauea/Kapaa/Wailua area Day 10, Thursday, February 17, 2011 Kayak Wailua River.
Paddle flat water on rigid two-person, self bailing kayaks up the north
fork, and hike to Secret Falls enjoying a swim at the falls. Back at
the river we will continue to a well-known swimming hole where there
may be a rope swing where people line up to jump off the cliff into the
water. 5 Miles
Dinner: Kapaa/Wailua area Day 11, Friday, February 18, 2011 Departure day
