Day 1, Saturday, September 24, 2011                
  • Arrival at Bozeman, MT Gallatin Field airport by 4 pm
  • Transport to Yellowstone Overlook Field Campus by YAI
  • Social hour/Leader’s welcome
  • Welcome dinner in cabin
Day 2, Sunday, September 25, 2011
  • Program: Yellowstone Volcano Geology Tour, and hike up Mt. Washburn. Beginning with a drive up Dunraven Pass, to get a view of the caldera, the trip visits strategic sights that help to tell the story of the volcano and how it fuels the Park’s many geothermal features. Rating: easy.
  • We will hike up Mt. Washburn, weather permitting, to visit the fire tower on top. 6 miles RT, approximately 1400 feet of elevation change. Rating: Moderate.
  • Transport to trailhead and back by YAI
  • Breakfast in cabin, sack lunch to take on trail, dinner in cabin.
Day 3, Monday, September 26, 2011
  • Program: Rim to Rim hike, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, 8 miles RT, 1,000 feet of elevation change. Hike along the rims of the canyon. Weather permitting; a descent will be made to the brink of the Upper and Lower Falls. Rating: Moderate.
  • Transport by YAI
  • Breakfast in cabin, trail lunch, dinner at hotel/restaurant in Park (at own expense)
Day 4, Tuesday, September 27, 2011
  • Program:  Mammoth Elk Rut, and tour of Mammoth Hot Springs. Rating: Easy. Possibly hike Snow Pass. Rating: Moderate.
  • Transport by YAI
  • Breakfast in cabin, trail lunch, dinner at Mammoth Hotel in Park (at own expense)
Day 5, Wednesday, September 28, 2011
  • Observation Peak hike, 6 miles RT, 1400 feet elevation change. Rating: Strenuous. Program focuses on the ecology of the Alpine environment- how plants and animals adapt to survive at high elevations. Or we may hike Specimen Ridge to see the petrified forests. Distance and elevation change, similar to Observation Peak.
  • Transport by YAI
  • Breakfast in cabin, trail lunch, dinner at hotel/restaurant in Park, or in town of Gardiner (at own expense)
Day 6, Thursday, September 29, 2011
  • Old Faithful and Upper Geyser Basin, and short hike (.5 mi. each way) to Observation Point above the Geyser Basin. Rating: easy.
  • Transport by YAI
  • Breakfast in cabin, trail lunch, dinner at cabin (pizza from place in town of Gardiner, cost included in trip price) 
Day 7, Friday, September 30, 2011
  • Yellowstone Confluence hike, 4 miles RT, 200 feet of elevation change. Moderate.
  • Hike off trail to the confluence of the Yellowstone and Lamar Rivers, through rich wild life habitat. Or we may hike the Slough Creek trail in the same area.
  • Transport by YAI
  • Breakfast in cabin, trail lunch, Farewell Dinner in town of Gardiner (included in trip price)
Day 8, Saturday, October 1, 2011
  • Breakfast in cabin
  • Return to Bozeman airport by YAI, leave camp at 9 am.
