Green River Canoe Camping and Hiking, UTAH
May 16-24, 2012
$1355

Mary Coffin, Leader
TRIP IS NOW FULL - CONTACT THE TRIP LEADER TO BE PUT ON A WAITING LIST

We will paddle down ~45 miles of the Green River, Labyrinth Canyon section, a long smooth water stretch with only occasional riffles. We will be paddling in the wake of John Wesley Powell (1869) and other river canyon expeditions. The canyons are rich in history, geology and Ancestral Puebloan rock art. We will tent on the shore and explore side canyons by foot and canoe. There is no portaging, just put in and take out.

We will paddle past Dellenbaugh's Butte, named for a young artist on the second Powell expedition. We pass the mouth of the San Rafael River. Then sandstone walls begin to rise several hundred feet overhead. We stop to investigate Trin-Alcove Bend, where three lush side canyons converge. Rock alcoves protect hanging gardens and amplify the song of the canyon wren. On hikes we'll discuss common plants and their uses by Indian cultures and see Fremont rock art etched into sheer stone walls. We paddle down river in an ever-deepening canyon to Bowknot Bend, where the river winds around in a big 7-mile loop. Near Hey Joe Canyon, we'll see the remnants of old uranium mining operations.
