Olympic National Park Hiking & Nature Study
August 19 - 25, 2012
       $ 1780

Micheline Kagan, Trip Leader

olympic national parkThis hiking trip will focus on the natural history and diverse ecosystems on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. The Olympic Peninsula and the Olympic National Park offer distinct contrasting environments: Glaciated peaks, subalpine meadows, wild Pacific coast, magnificent stands of old-growth forests and temperate rain forests.

We will hike daily, 3 to 10 miles RT and some elevation gain with a naturalist guide. Hikes will vary from alpine ridges with views of glacier capped peaks, and meadows abundant with wildflowers on several days to deep valleys of the temperate rainforests with their huge old growth trees, giant ferns and hanging mosses and lichens. We will witness fascinating tidal pools, scenic beaches, and amazing sea life. At the end of each day we return to the comfort and hospitality of Lake Crescent Lodge. After a few days of exploration, you'll understand why Olympic National Park is internationally recognized as a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site. The old growth forests of Sitka spruce, western red cedar and hemlock are magical places. These massive trees soar to the heavens while protecting thick carpets of mosses, ferns and wildflowers. Watch elk and black-tailed deer while listening for the whistle of the Olympic marmot. Trek up "Hurricane Ridge" and view majestic Mount Olympus--still covered with glistening white glaciers. Bring your camera; the scenery will take your breath away!
