St. John is the smallest island in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and over 2/3 of it is protected national park, making it the least developed island in the Caribbean. Many pristine beaches link to the 5,600 acres of underwater national park, so this is a perfect spot for ecotourists who dream of warm turquoise water, beaches galore, exploring coral reefs and sandy bays, palm trees and perpetual summer. Listed in 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, Maho Bay Camp is described as an award-winning no-frills resort; with its small screen/cloth/wood cabins built on stilts up a hillside in a way that makes guests feel like privileged interlopers in paradise. It’s a bit like living in a tree house, with all areas of the camp connected by walkways and steps, and one long series of steps going down to the camp’s own aqua cove & beach. Maho Bay Camp is on leased land that was supposed to have been sold two years ago; this is the third—and most likely final—year that the resort has said will be its last.

The island is famous for its many undeveloped, stunning beaches and ocean breezes. We will visit a different beach every day. Mostly we will swim and snorkel, but we will also visit some sugar mills and plantation ruins, and hike on trails to some of the best snorkeling sites. Our longest planned hike is 6 miles on a trail that was once a main road across the island. This takes us to Reef Bay Sugar Mill and the petroglyphs at the island’s sole spring. A birding area is not far from the camp (down a steep hill); some participants in the past have enjoyed this as an early morning activity. Between the bus rides to various beaches on the island and the boat trip circumnavigating the island, we’ll experience a lot of this gem of an island.

The camp offers other activities on site with its bay, so it’s fine to choose other options or do as little as you like. Mary and Tom have stayed at Maho Bay Camp three times and at the Cinnamon Bay Campground once, so they are familiar with many parts of the island and still eager to go back.
