Itinerary
Weather conditions and
local transportation requirements may force a change in the stated
itinerary. However the itinerary will be varied and interesting.Day 1, Sunday, February 26, 2012 You will be met at
the Cruz Bay ferry on St. John. Take truck-taxi to Maho Bay Camps and
settle in. Dinner at the camp pavilion restaurant if you arrive in time.
Day 2, Monday, February 27, 2012 Gather in Pavilion
after breakfast to meet everyone and get oriented to the camp setting
and services. Activity for the day is to snorkel at one or more of the
3 bays at and near Maho Bay (Little Maho, Big Maho and Francis Bays).
Meals are available at camp.
Day 3, Tuesday, February 28, 20121 Bus to Cinnamon Bay
(National Park camp ground) for a short tour, then head for Trunk Bay
to swim and snorkel along the park’s underwater trail. Continue by bus
to Caneel Bay for a tour and lunch. Walk trail into town (1 mile).
Visit the Park Services Visitor’s Center in Cruz Bay. There will be a
chance for a little shopping or looking around Cruz Bay before getting
bussed back to Maho Bay.
Day 4: Wednesday, February 29, 2012 TBoat trip around St.
John with a couple snorkel stops en route. Drinks and lunch provided on
board. Bring extra water and usual gear for being out in the sun.
Day 5, Thursday, March 1, 2012 Bus to trailhead for
Reef Bay hike. Six mile trail is rocky at the start, but all down hill
and shaded except for one half-mile section that’s uphill in the sun.
We’ll see ancient spring and petroglyphs, ruins – including the last
working sugar mill, and some of the oldest trees on the island. Swim at
Lamesure Bay, where the bus picks us up. Bring water and food for most
of the day.
Day 6, Friday, March 2, 2012 Bus to Salt Pond area
on far side of island to swim and snorkel along with an optional hike
to Ram Head (1 ½ mi. and 300’ elevation.) This is an unshaded
part of the island, so bring enough water, food, sunhat and sunscreen.
Day 7, Saturday, March 3, 2012Taxi or walk 1 1/2
miles to Annaburg Sugar Mill historic site. Tour the sugar mill, see
cultural demonstrations. Walk 1 mile trail to Leinster Bay for swim and
snorkel, then another 1/2 mile to snorkel around Waterlemon Cay and see
additional plantation ruins. Walk 3 miles back to camp (flat
until the steep hill at the end), or arrange for a pick up at Annaburg
site. Bring lunch and water..
Day 8, Sunday, March 4, 2012 Early 7:00 AM bird
walk at Francis Bay hosted by park ranger. Taxi to Haulover Bay at far
side of island to snorkel. Lunch at Miss Vie’s Snack Shack. Taxi back
to camp. If some want a long hike back to the camp, this is a
possibility.
Day 9, Day 9: Monday, March 5, 2012 Time to pack up,
clean out our little cabin-tents and leave, ALAS.
