Norway: Mountain Hiking, Biking & Fjord Kayaking
July 11-20, 2012
$2245

Mary Hong Loe, Trip Leader  •  Co-leader: Gretchen Yealy

norwayAll in one! Experience Norway’s great outdoors with three or four activities in eight full days beyond Oslo. The adventure starts with 3 plus days of hiking in the mountain area of Skarvheimen, known for its great variations -- broad valleys, wide plateaus, rugged peaks and precipitous slopes, lakes, and charming lodges that encourage hut-to-hut hikes. Here the eastern and western parts of the country meet mightily. The next day we can rest, take short day hikes, or take an optional, popular glacier walk into the blue ice of Norway’s 6tth largest glacier, the Hardangerjøkulen. Next we’ll take Norway’s most popular mountain bike trip on the road/track known as “Rallarvegen.” The route starts on the mountain plateau at 1000 meters and ends up at sea level in Flåm on the amazing Aurlands Fjord, which is a finger of the 2nd longest fjord in the world, the Søgnefjord. After a night in the Fretheim Hotel, we’ll use sea kayaks to paddle out in the narrow fjord and perhaps combine this with a short hike to an historical Viking site. We catch a bus to a cozy, historic mountain lodge at Østerbø, and on our last day we take a spectacular hike down what many consider the most beautiful valley trail in Norway, the Aurlandsdal valley. We end up back in Flåm, where our journey on the famously engineered train—the Flåmsbanen—plus the train ride from Myrdal to Oslo, give our tour a spectacular ending that is listed in the book 1,000 Places to See Before You Die.

2 nights in a central Oslo hotel, 6 nights in DNT’s or private mountain lodges, and 1 night in a hotel in Flåm. Norway’s mountain cabins are known for the cozy atmosphere of their pleasant common areas. A few lodges may have saunas. All have drying rooms that usually do an excellent job of drying out hand washing or rain gear.
