Introduction

In the 1970’s, Alfred Wainwright cobbled together an epic walk all the way across northern England, about 192 miles from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. Along the way the route passes through the Lake District National Park, The Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the North York Moors National Park. This walk has become one of the premiere long distance trips in the world.

Come join Gretchen Yealy and Ginny Fauci as we wend our way across England. We start by dipping our boots in the Irish Sea and heading northward along the bluffs. We then turn eastward and wind up and down the “fells” of the beautiful Lake District, then across the flatter midsection of the country. We’ll take a day to rest in the lovely market town of Richmond. Into the hills we go again as we traverse the moors of Yorkshire and catch our first enticing glimpses of the North Sea. May is the perfect month to go, as we’ll enjoy watching the lambs play on sunny, breezy days. Of course, sunny and breezy may suddenly turn into driving horizontal rain or pelting hail—but then maybe we’ll see a rainbow or two!  The varied greens of the landscape flow by at an easy pace in this part of the world where the ancient rhythms of seedtime and harvest, sun and overcast, and morning and evening still hold sway.

Without a doubt, walking 192 miles takes a bit of persistence, but with our duffle bags moved for us each night, we will have to carry only a day pack. Hikers also have the option of riding in the van with the luggage on any day. Each night our bed & breakfast or small inn will provide a welcome (if sometimes quirky!) respite, with a hot meal, private bath, and cozy bed. Our hosts are always ready with a cheerful smile and a helping hand

Accommodations

All nights will be in bed & breakfast facilities or small inns. All have private bath (called “en suite” in England). Group size is limited to 16 total.

Special Note

This excursion is intended for experienced walkers in good physical condition. The estimated hiking distance is 192 miles, approximately 6-15 miles per day. The elevation gains and losses are relatively modest compared to Adirondack or Alpine treks, but the footing is quite varied and can be very muddy and rough. There are numerous stiles and gates, and several extended sections on paved surfaces. The pub or restaurant where we have our dinner may be a distance from our lodging, so even when the day’s route is complete there may be more walking to do!  Route finding can be very challenging on this trip. Detailed “strip” maps will be provided by Packhorse, our luggage service. The leaders will have several different guidebooks and they have all done the route before. Nonetheless, participants should be prepared to “roll with the punches”!  As with all outdoor activities, the weather will play a large role in our choice of route each day.

Included in this cost will be:
  • Group transfer from the Manchester Airport to St. Bee’s
  • Group transfer from Robin Hood’s Bay to the Manchester Airport
  • Luggage transfer (1 soft-sided duffle per person, maximum 44 lbs.) each
  • Transfer for tired or injured walkers in the luggage van on any day
  • All breakfasts—the “full English” includes eggs, bacon, sausage, tomatoes, baked beans, mushrooms and toast, cooked to order.  Also available most mornings are hot or cold cereals, fresh fruit, and yogurt
  • 1 complete set of trail maps per couple/address
  • All accommodations.  Note that all facilities have private baths and provide coffee, tea, or sometimes cocoa and snacks in all rooms
  • Detailed packing and equipment list
Not included in this cost will be:
  • Airfare to Manchester, England
  • Lunches and trail snacks. Most facilities will provide a packed trail lunch at reasonable cost
  • Dinners. We will eat in local pubs or at our lodging facility
Note:  Allow roughly $500-600 per person in additional costs depending on individual eating and drinking habits.
