Itinerary
This is a tentative schedule. Our day to day activities may vary depending on weather conditions. Day 1, Tuesday, February 12, 2013 ![]() Arrive Lihue’s
Airport on Kauai. We will meet at the airport and have transportation
to our lodging. (Note on arrival times—between 5-7PM). You will
be given a general overview of where the restaurants, shops, etc are.
Dinner: restaurant in the Coconut Marketplace. Day 2, Wednesday, February 13, 2013 We will transport the
group to the grocery store in the morning. The afternoon will be spent
hiking Sleeping Giant from the East Trail. Nearly the entire trail is
through forest with wonderful views. 4 miles; Elevation gain/loss
1000’-moderate
Dinner: Café CoCo Day 3, Thursday, February 14, 2013 Hike Kalalau Trail to
Hanakapi’ai Beach. We will hike a section of the most famous trail in
all Hawaii. The views along the Na Pali coast are exceptional. 4
miles –Hanakapi’ai Beach; Elevation gain/loss under 1000’-moderate
We will also have time to visit picture-postcard Hanalei. Hanalei has a 2 mile crescent beach, shops and restaurants. Dinner in Hanalei. Day 4, Friday, February 15, 2013 We will see the Na
Pali coast through Hawaiian eyes as our captain will share not only
history and legends but family experiences passed on from generation to
generation. We will journey past beautiful waterfalls, majestic peaks
and valleys, sea caves and lava tubes, experience the wonders of the
sea with spinner dolphins, sea turtles and whales. If conditions are
favorable we may enjoy an hour of snorkeling and a deli lunch is
included. Weather permitting we will plan for an afternoon cruise
returning at sunset.
Dinner: Harbor Place in Lihue Day 5, Saturday, February 16, 2013 Hike Awa’awaphui
Trail. This will be our first adventure to Waimea Canyon and is one of
Kauai’s beauties. The hike goes through natural tropical gardens to an
adrenaline-rush ridge—the jewel of Na Pali. 6.5 miles; elevation
gain/loss 1500’-strenuous
Dinner: Kapaa/Wailua area Day 6, Sunday, February 17, 2013 Hike Keahua Arboretum
on the Moalepe Trail/Kuilau Ridge Trail.
We will utilize two trails for an end-to-end hike starting on the Maolepe Trail and ending on the Kuilau Ridge Trail at the Keahua Arboretum. The arboretum planted with both native and introduced tree species is intended as an outdoor classroom for students and tourist alike. We should be back to our lodging for lunch. 4.5 miles-moderate In the late afternoon we will drive to a parking lot north of Kealia Beach and walk 3 ½ miles on a walking/bike path along the ocean back to Kapaa. Dinner: Kapaa Day 7, Monday, February 18, 2013Today we will take a
day off and do some touring—checking out Lihue, the Kaua’i Coffee
Company, Kilohana—returning mid-afternoon to get ready for our Lu’au
Dinner: Lu’au Day 8, Tuesday, February 19, 2013 Hike Canyon Trail to
Waipo’o Falls. This trail takes us onto a dramatic barren ridge with
canyon views and ends at the top of Waipo’o Falls; 4 miles-moderate. We
will also take time to sightsee along the Canyon road and lookouts and
get a taste of Hawaiian shave ice at the famous Jo-Jo’s
Dinner: Waimea Day 9, Wednesday, February 20, 2013 We will begin our day
visiting the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge/Lighthouse (where
you can easily spot red footed boobies, great frigate birds, laysan
albatross and Nene) with a presentation on the refuge by one of their
rangers. Our next stop will be Secret Beach where we will walk this
long, golden sand beach with views of Moku’ae’ae (a bird sanctuary) and
the Kilauea Lighthouse and weather permitting walk to the Secret Lava
Pools. We will then end our day in Hanalei for another beach walk and a
possible swim.
Dinner: Hanalei Day 10, Thursday, February 21, 2013 Kayak Wailua River.
Paddle flat water on rigid two-person, self bailing kayaks up the north
fork, and hike to Secret Falls enjoying a swim at the falls. Back at
the river we will continue to a well-known swimming hole where there
may be a rope swing where people line up to jump off the cliff into the
water. 5 Miles-moderate
Dinner: Hukilau Lanai Day 11, Friday, February 22, 2013 Departure day – (Note
Flight time-anytime after 2PM)
